DEBBIE SYMONS

As a young university student, Debbie was often chastised by her friends for spending all of her money on art, leaving none left to travel.  Like many other passionate artists, Debbie knew that art could offer the same thought-provoking and mind-expanding experience and she saw it as money well spent.

Raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and surrounded by golden prairies and cobalt blue mountains, Debbie attributes the area's energy, generosity and natural richness as instrumental in developing her passion for art.  Her favorite time of day is early morning when she is drawn to the peaceful colors of the dawning light as it moves from black into gray, red into orange.  Debbie is also fascinated by weather, studying it in university and, more recently, as an amateur storm watcher.  No matter what the day brings, whether it's sunny, overcast or foggy, she finds inspiration in the planet's daily routine of cyclic changes.

As an artist, Debbie works with acrylics and other materials to create individual abstract mixed media pieces – evoking strong emotions and a sense of movement.  Despite being an eternal optimist by nature, dark forces seem to exude from the canvas, displaying a rare dichotomy of lightness suffused with more somber realities.  Even though she works in abstracts, elements of nature are incorporated into new creations involving paint, sand, metal and other found materials.

Debbie’s artwork reflects her passion for animation.  She loves to work with texture, rich colors and unusual materials.  She also finds daily inspiration through reading and running, with a healthy dose of wine thrown in for good measure!  With years of experience in the wine industry, Debbie is also an active member of Calgary's wine community.

In the past, Debbie studied painting with Timothy Wilson Hoey.  Her work is sold online through this website as well as at various art events.  She is also available to create custom commission pieces.
